A peek into the thoughts of the man behind Milk Carton Designs

Welcome to Version 3    54

Posted: May 26, 2005 @ 06:14 PM EDT | Filed Under: Life, Site News and Updates

Try not to step on all of the bugs. Comments don’t work, I got a buggy home link, I gotta fix up the Pages. But for now, I have to go see my lady dance on a stage. So. I’ll fix them later and update this post as things move along.

Update #1

I don’t know what’s wrong with the comments. I’ll get to them later, too tired right now. Oh. And by the way, the lady danced h4wtly.

Update #2

Home page link fixed. Working on comments.

Update #3

Comments are back up because I pwn all code before me. \m/–(>.<)--\m/

Working on styling the comments.

Update #4

The Pages are fixed for the most part, barring edits and the Colophon still being a bit b0rked.

Still working on styling the comments.

Update #5

Comments = Styled and pwn3d.

Moving on to clean up the pages.

Update #6

The Pages are all cleaned up, code-wise, they just need some editing and cleaning up, wording-wise.

This site has only been tested in Safari and Mac IE, so if it’s buggy in your browser, it’ll be fixed soon. And comments will be better styled later.

Anyways, welcome to Milk Carton Designs v. 3.0 (”Super Blue Funk”). Enjoy.

Netscape Revived! … Not.    28

Posted: May 24, 2005 @ 11:45 AM EDT | Filed Under: Browsers

AOL made another couple of boo-boos.

First off, they tried to revive a dead browser. Number two, if you insist on releasing a new version of Netscape, at least make sure you don’t have to release a security patch 12 hours after release when you market it as secure.

Good. Job. AOL.

Incoming…!    24

In-n-n-n the spirit of summer, which is incoming, I’m planning a redesign. Light, bright, fun, clean, simple. That’s 5… Let’s go for more… How about so-friggin’-amazing-it’ll-burn-your-retinas-off. So that’s light, bright, fun, clean, simple, and so-friggin’-amazing-it’ll-burn-your-retinas-off. Something else? Um. Light, bright, fun, clean, simple, so-friggin’-amazing-it’ll-burn-your-retinas-off, and… h4wt. Score.

So… expect something fun, soon. I may put up a mockup in the days to come.

The Movie Baton    11

I’d thought I might be writing something… meaningful… today, but alas… I got passed a baton (I didn’t steal it ;D ) by Tom, so I figured I’d do that instead. Go nuts.

Total # Of Movies I Own
50+, I think? I’m not sure.

The Last DVD I Bought Was:
Something… a while ago. Perhaps AC/DC Live at Donnington

Last Movie I Watched:
Hmm. Shallow Hal, last night on TV

Five Movies That I Watch A Lot, Or That Mean A Lot To Me:

  1. The Preacher’s Wife — Don’t judge me
  2. The Fast and The Furious
  3. Ladder 49
  4. American History X
  5. Scarface

Five Two People To Whom I’m Passing the Baton:

  1. Reid Lynch
  2. John Oxton

Now bother me not with another baton :P

The Musical Baton    24

Since sleep is not my friend, and no one has passed it to me yet, that I know of, I’m stealing the musical baton, like the awesome folks at The Big Noob. That’s right— I’m like one of those random guys you see on TV that runs out onto the football field during the middle of the game and steals the ball, then gets tackled by 20 security guards and at least 10 football players and a coach. So without furthur ado…

Total Volume Of Music Files On My Computer:
This computer? 1.95GB. However, I keep nothing on this computer, so what my iPod holds (4.77GB) is probably a far more accurate representation.

The Last CD I Bought Was:
Hm. “Frail Words Collapse” by As I Lay Dying, I think.

Song Playing Right Now:
“Return to Snake Mountain” by Machinae Supremacy (go download their free songs and buy their album)

Five Songs I Listen To A Lot, Or That Mean A Lot To Me:
You had to make this difficult, didn’t you? *sigh*

  1. “Return to Snake Mountain” by Machinae Supremacy
  2. “Overload” by Soilwork
  3. “The Quiet Place” by In Flames
  4. “Civil War” by Guns N’ Roses
  5. “My Last Serenade” by Killswitch Engage

Five People To Whom I’m Passing The Baton:
Buahahahaha. I’m chucking this stolen baton at:

  1. Tom Park
  2. Reid Lynch
  3. Eric McLean
  4. Shawn Parker (I better see lots of 80s pop, mister)
  5. And what the heck, maybe he’ll do it— John Whittet

Freshly Pressed    18

Posted: May 16, 2005 @ 04:06 AM EDT | Filed Under: WordPress, Projects

Recently, I was invited by a good friend (Hi, Michael ;D ) to join a new “startup,” so to speak, with an interesting concept. It’s like any web dev/design startup, where people hire us to build and design a site for them, we get paid, and we do what we love. However, this start-up had a twist: its primary focus was building sites around Wordpress. I, obviously, took the job.

Freshly Pressed, as stated above, focuses its design efforts around Wordpress. We will offer professional-quality Wordpress themes for a fee, as well as hiring out for more customized sites. This is seemingly, though not a completely original idea, the only business of its kind surrounding Wordpress. We hope this will bring about amazing results. The people we have brought in are yanked straight out of the Wordpress community (mostly from the Wordpress IRC channel) and know what they’re doing. I am proud to be involved with this project, and with the help of my colleagues, hope to bring this startup from an idea to an amazing success.

New Section in the Portfolio    10

Posted: May 12, 2005 @ 01:19 AM EDT | Filed Under: Projects, Site News and Updates

Just as a note, a new section, Current Projects, has been added to the Portfolio. This will be a constantly updated list of projects I’m currently working on for various clients or for myself. Some projects will, of course, be omitted from this list, depending on whether I’m bound by an NDA or not. However, the list will be a fairly accurate look at my current workload, and should provide a look into what’s to come from the Milk Carton Designs camp.

For the Love of Music    12

Posted: May 10, 2005 @ 10:22 AM EDT | Filed Under: Music

Recently, I read an essay written by a good friend about the travesties of what today passes as popular music, and wanted to expand on it.

Today, to most artists, I think it’s about money. Money should not be a factor when you create music. Music is a vessel with which to express yourself, in terms of emotion or a message you feel you have to express. It isn’t about rolling around with your 24-inch chromed-out, spinning rims on your 0.32924mpg Hummer H2, and it isn’t about how much you tapped that, yo.

It’s not just rap/hip hop I’m against, either, they’re just the easiest examples to cite. And don’t get me wrong, there are several rap songs I love to death, because they have meaning and depth, unlike so many out there today.

If you insist on being on the radio (which I haven’t listened to outside a car or any where remotely recreationally in some years), then sing something with meaning. “Oops, I did it again” isn’t music— it’s words accompanied by instruments, with something I’d hesitate to call a melody.

If you want to listen to music, listen to something you can get meaning from. Listen to something you can listen to and take something out of. If you have to dig and search and find unknown bands from Sweden, like myself, well, that’s fine. Just don’t settle for cheap imitations of music where the artists are only in it for the money— it’s degrading.
